A pair of 2004 born, Russell athletes had an exciting day this past Thursday when they had their names called during the Western Hockey League’s (WHL) Bantam Draft.
Held in Red Deer, AB, WHL teams took turns plucking the top prospects in Western Canada and the western U.S. to stockpile talent for future rosters.
Tyson Zimmer, one of the top prospects available won’t have to go far to start his junior hockey career. The 5’9”, 170 pound forward was selected with the sixth pick overall by the Brandon Wheat Kings. Zimmer played this past season with the Okanagan Hockey Academy Bantam Prep School where he scored 22 goals and assisted on 30 others in 26 games played.
Ryder Thompson, a 5’7”, 154 pound defenseman was selected by the Portland Winterhawks in the fifth round, 105th overall. Thompson spent this past season in Winnipeg with the Rink Hockey Academy National Bantam Prep School where he scored three goals to go along with 20 assists in 29 games played.
See next week’s Russell Banner for comments from both players.
Of note, Conor Geekie of Strathclair was selected second overall by the Winnipeg Ice. Geekie last season played with the Yellowhead Chiefs Bantam AAA program.
