Don't fall into a scammer's trap
Police Report, Posted on February 10, 2020

January 24, 6:30 p.m. – A young lady attended the Russell detachment to report that she had received a call from STATS Canada and the Russell RCMP from someone by the name Officer Marshall. The scammer told her that she would be arrested if she did not empty her bank account and buy gift cards. The complainant decided to attend the Russell RCMP office to speak with Officer Marshall because that is who called her. Police spoke to her and advised her it was a scam. The victim stated that she had already spent $500 on gift cards and was unable to return them.  She did not give out any other personal information to the scammer and was relieved that it was a scam and that she had not sent the gift cards. Her new quote is ‘Live and Learn’. Just a reminder from the RCMP that if you receive a call with this type of allegation, check with the local police immediately. RCMP and STATS Canada do not accept gift cards as payment.

Make sure you aren’t a victim! Never give your personal information to a caller and when in doubt hang up and contact the company directly using a verified phone number.
